Five years ago this past Labor Day, the 242 Fire blew up near Spring Creek in Chiloquin. It really did a number on the forest around Spring Creek and the Williamson River and even over around Crooked Creek. It is, of course, hard to look at and not be totally bummed out, but beneath the snags, the land is coming back to life. We see fireweed, penstemon, ceonothus all roaring back and along the banks, the bog orchids still bloom in June. Bright splashes of Castilleja decorate the grasses and on a warm day, the smell of white sage and sugar pine can be detected over the char.
Spring Creek is still an utterly gorgeous place to paddle your kayak, canoe or board. We hope to see you on it next year!
Our commercial season ends October 1 and we return on June 1. Fall is one of the most beautiful times to be on our rivers and lakes. Y'all got something like 20 days to get in a good paddlin' with us!
